Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants stabilize dentures and act as artificial tooth roots. Dental implants allow your dentures to remain securely in place because they’re made of sturdy titanium material and fused to your jawbone in an in-office procedure.

Dental implants are available in many different sizes and shapes.

Dr. Oh creates a secure base for your replacement teeth by surgically fusing the implants to your jawbone. He carefully places your dentures on top of the implants to replace a few missing teeth or an entire set of teeth.

What’s the procedure for placing dental implants?

During your in-office dental implant procedure, Dr. Oh administers anesthesia and makes an incision in your gums. He drills small holes in your jawbone before placing titanium implants in the holes.

Dr. Oh stitches your gums closed to give your new implants time to fuse with your jaw. This fusion process is called osseointegration. Once Dr. Oh surgically places your implant, it usually takes about three to six months for your implants and your jawbone to successfully fuse together.

After the healing process is complete, you return to the office and Dr. Oh secures a supporting element called an abutment to the top of each implant. For the final step, Dr. Oh attaches your prosthesis to the abutments.

How do I know if I’m a suitable candidate for dental implants?

You’re a suitable candidate for dental implants if you:

  • Have healthy oral tissues
  • Have a jawbone that’s fully grown
  • Haven’t had success with your regular dentures
  • Don’t have any health conditions that can affect bone healing

Dr. Oh might suggest dental implants if you want to improve your speech, if your regular dentures keep falling out, or if you have missing teeth.

Millions of people experience tooth loss for many reasons, such as injury to the teeth, age-related tooth decay, and periodontal disease.

Over time, missing teeth can lead to bone loss that can change the shape of your face.
